Boticas is a lovely village located in the wild Barroso Mountain, in the northeast of Portugal. The production of honey always had great importance in this county. This can be witnessed in the big pot located next to the parish church of Vila Grande de Dornelas, and the town’s coat of arms, where the image of a bee stands out.

The honey produced in Barroso’s highest elevation regions comes from the Apis mellifera iberiensis (sp. Iberian) bees, which breed and deposit it on the honeycomb, from the nectar of the characteristic flowers of this mountainous region. Its extraordinary vegetation is composed mainly of heather (Erica sp.), which, besides providing a good development of the bee colonies, leads to the production of a dark coloured honey with an unique aroma and flavor, making it an unusually rich and appreciated product. This honey has won numerous awards, and the product certification with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), awarded to the brand “Honey from Barroso”, promoted by the Agricultural Cooperative of Boticas.

Given the importance of beekeeping for this county, nothing more natural than choosing this theme for the renovation of Noro Leisure Park playground area. In this new Play in Art® playground, kids and adults can play safely among friendly bees and explore the interior of the “Honey Towers” beehives (Ref. ª P18TZ06).
