Opened in 1998, during the last world exhibition to be held in the twentieth century, entitled “The oceans, a heritage for the future”, the Lisbon Oceanarium is a large aquarium whose prestige is widely recognized and has received the prize of “Best Aquarium of the World” by TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice, for several years in a row.
Framed in the landscape by the Tagus River, its main mascot is the superhero Vasco, defender of the oceans, created to honour Vasco da Gama, the great Portuguese navigator.
In 2017 Play Planet was invited to produce a second head of Vasco, the emblematic thematic piece anchored in the bay in front of the Oceanarium (Tagus river port), visible even from the distance. For maintenance and conservation, this piece is removed by Play Planet every 6 months to be cleaned and recovered, and using the same boat visit to install it´s replica, which will remain there for another half of a year.
We were also asked to restore the large Vasco figure that “greets” visitors in front of the main entrance, and to produce a new, smaller Vasco figure to be installed inside the building. In addition to these, Play Planet also produced a mobile phone charging point, inspired by Vasco’s head shape, with table and benches for a temporary installation during the summer of 2017. This charging point has the particularity of not requiring electrical power, but operating with internal kinetic energy system, activated by the users by turning one of the 2 discs, embedded in the table.
