Play Planet was challenged to design an inclusive theme playground to be installed at Quinta de São Gonçalo, in Carcavelos, in the municipality of Cascais. The theme: Cascais and its Cascalitos mascots from the Education and Environmental Awareness Program of Cascais.
The intervention area corresponded to a lawn area with 183m2, therefore it was necessary to build the sub-base, involving various civil construction and gardening.
For this park Play Planet has created several equipment inspired by the sea and Cascais, such as the “LIGHTHOUSE PLAY” (Ref.ª P16TC02), an activity tower with 6.83m in height, replica of the emblematic Lighthouse of Santa Marta, and the hosts of this theme park, “Bia” and “João”, two famous Cascalitos.
Bia Cascalito (Ref. D16TB05) took the shape of an original information board with all necessary safety information in accordance with the legislation and regulations in force.
However we thought of the users who, being blind or with severe visual limitations, cannot have access to this written content. Thus, we transformed João Cascalito (Ref.ª P16TB02) into an original point of audio description, activated through mechanical energy produced by the user. When turning the disc on the back of its head, the system is activated and users can listen to its audio content, which contains a description of the equipment´s and the space around them, as well as the danger alerts and all the required safety information, allowing visually impaired users to get a sense of the potential dangers and activities around them. This audio presentation includes also environmental awareness information, as well as the origin of the name Cascais and information about the Santa Marta Lighthouse.
The safety floor is made of PlayBase slabs covered by synthetic turf, accessible to wheelchairs.
