The Amoreiras Shopping Center, located in Lisbon and inaugurated on September 27, 1985, was the first large space of commerce and services in urban area of Portugal, being at the time the largest commercial space in the country and the fourth largest in Europe.

The Amoreiras Complex, designed by the architect Tomás Taveira, also comprised offices and private apartments, distributed by three towers shaped as chess pieces, symbolizing a lady defended by two knights. With its mirrored glass windows, escalators, restaurants, big supermarket, cinemas, and numerous shops quickly became a “trendy” place, with a strong impact on the economic, social and cultural life of the city. Its architecture, very daring for the time, was awarded with the Municipal and Valmor Prize of Architecture of 1993.

Play Planet was invited to redesign the existing children’s playground in the Amoreiras Shopping Center, in an area of approximately 150m2 between columns on the ground floor, having as theme the heritage and legacy of this historic Lisbon Shopping Center. We have thus conceived the “AMOREIRAS TOWERS” (ref. P17TB05), an activity centre, replica of the famous towers, considered as one of the greatest symbols of Postmodernism existing in Portugal.
